I’m Mark Cipollina, inventor of ZenSpace™ and founder of Generation Nomad.
On a 5-month backpacking trip from Egypt to England, I first conceptualized ZenSpace™. Over breakfast in Spain, I was talking with two hostel roommates about the privacy curtains a few hostels install on their beds. One roommate said he would gladly pay a premium for a hostel with curtains, while the other complained about how hot and dirty these built-in curtains are.
That conversation stuck with me as I traveled. Could I design a privacy structure that works with any bed or dorm setup? Could it include built-in pockets for easy-access essentials? Could it provide privacy without discouraging connection among roommates? Could it be breathable, lightweight, and easy to clean?
I also spoke with the owner of a high-end hostel in Portugal. Over coffee, I asked why they didn’t install curtains on bunk beds. He explained the challenges: cost, liability, cleaning, careless short-term guests, and ongoing maintenance. He emphasized that privacy isn’t just a hostel issue, it’s a problem in all college dorms, summer camps, aviation crash pads, military barracks, and more.
The more I traveled through hostels, the more I realized how many situations ZenSpace could help with dormitory living. Staying in a top bunk with no shelf? Now you have your own storage. From that moment, I knew I had an idea worth pursuing. ZenSpace™ began as a solution for hostels and has evolved into a product for anyone staying in dormitory-style accommodations, providing a personal sanctuary wherever they rest their head.
