3. Germany
Germany will always hold a special place in my heart for December travel. I used to be in a long distance relationship with a German girl and would always spend the holidays in Germany. It is an ideal December destination for solo backpackers who enjoy mixing cultural exploration with social experiences. The country is known for its Christmas markets, and visiting these festive markets in cities like Munich or Cologne offers solo travelers the chance to meet fellow backpackers and locals. Wander through quaint medieval towns like Rothenburg or explore the vibrant capital, Berlin. December brings a festive atmosphere that makes solo travel feel less solitary as you immerse yourself in German traditions and holiday spirit.
Germany’s efficient public transport network ensures that solo travelers can easily navigate from bustling cities to serene countryside escapes, perfect for a mix of urban exploration and nature walks. The festive markets, with their cozy charm, offer plenty of opportunities to connect with others, while outdoor enthusiasts can explore the Bavarian Alps for snow-capped hiking trails.
Budget Tip: Use Germany’s extensive train network to explore several cities cheaply. BlaBlaCar ride-sharing is also a great way to save money. Also German grocery stores are quite inexpensive compared to similar countries.
Must Have: RFID Blocking Wallet
Top Experiences: Visiting the Nuremberg Christmas Market, hiking in the Bavarian Alps, and exploring Berlin’s iconic landmarks (even though Berlin could be really cold).
4. Thailand
Thailand is a solo traveler’s paradise, especially in the December (along with the ideal months of November and January too) when the weather is perfect for both island hopping and exploring. Bangkok and Chiang Mai have well-established backpacker hubs, making it easy to meet fellow travelers. Head south to Phuket or Koh Lanta for sun-drenched beaches and lively hostels. Thailand offers a mix of adventure and relaxation, and solo travelers will feel at home here, whether exploring ancient temples, trekking through jungles, or partying on the beach at Koh Phi Phi. Thailand’s friendly locals and well-traveled routes make it a welcoming place for first-time solo backpackers.
The north of Thailand offers more tranquility, with rich cultural experiences in Chiang Mai or Pai, where solo travelers can participate in meditation retreats, cooking classes, or multi-day jungle treks. In the south, you'll find a more social atmosphere, with beach parties and group tours that make it easy to connect with other travelers.
Budget Tip: Thailand is cheap in comparison to the other destinations on this list. If you need to save money, try taking an overnight buses to save on accommodation, and eat street food for an absolute bargain. However, since it is so cheap, I encourage you to enjoy yourself a bit. Getting a luxury hotel room could be just as expensive as a shared hostel room in Western Europe.
Must Have: Collapsible Water Bottle
Top Experiences: Trekking through jungles in Northern Thailand, visiting temples, and relaxing on tropical islands like Koh Tao and Koh Samui.
5. Japan
In December, Tokyo and Kyoto are particularly beautiful with their holiday lights and winter displays. Solo travelers will find it easy to explore these cities independently, whether wandering through Asakusa or visiting temples in Kyoto (or doing both!). Japan’s efficient trains ensure that even solo travelers can explore distant regions like Hokkaido for skiing or take a trip to hot springs in Hakone.
Japan’s mix of tradition and modernity makes it appealing for solo travelers. Whether you're seeking to explore ancient temples or soak in the vibrant nightlife of Shibuya, Japan offers something for every type of solo adventurer. Japan also provides a sense of safety and serenity that appeals to solo travelers looking to reflect and recharge.
Budget Tip: You will see marketed everywhere that the Japan Rail Pass (aka JR Pass) helps tourists save money on transportation. However, since their recent price increases, the value is no longer there anymore for travelers. Either purchase your train tickets individually or consider looking into the Klook Pass.
Must Have: Cable Organiser Pouch
Top Experiences: Skiing in Niseko, experiencing winter illuminations in Tokyo, soaking in hot springs (onsens), and hiking the trails of Hakone.
6. Mexico
The weather is perfect in December for exploring both Mexican cities and coastlines. Mexico City is a bustling metropolis with a thriving backpacker scene (and food scene!), where solo travelers can explore historical sites like Teotihuacan, visit museums, and enjoy the city’s diverse food culture. For beach lovers, head to the Yucatan Peninsula. Playa del Carmen or Tulum (and even head down to Bacalar, my favorite!), where you’ll find hostels brimming with fellow travelers and stunning beaches perfect for unwinding or joining group activities like diving, cenote hopping, and snorkeling.
Mexico’s solo travel experience is enhanced by its rich cultural traditions, especially during the festive season of Las Posadas (more or less the week before Christmas). This holiday offers the perfect opportunity to immerse yourself in local culture, join processions, and interact with locals. You’ll also find numerous day trips to explore Mayan ruins, such as Chichen Itza.
Budget Tip: Mexico isn't as cheap as you would think if you are going to the well-established, backpacker destinations that are safe. You can try using 'colectivos' (shared vans) to travel economically between towns along the Yucatan coast.
Must Have: Fully Body Travel Towel
Top Experiences: Exploring the ruins of Chichen Itza, attending Las Posadas festivities, and relaxing in Tulum’s hostels and eco-cabins.
7. Finland
Solo backpackers seeking a winter wonderland in December will love Finland. The northern region of Lapland is an ideal destination for those looking for a unique winter adventure, with opportunities to meet other solo travelers while dog sledding, snowshoeing, or chasing the Northern Lights. The festive town of Rovaniemi is known as the official home of Santa Claus, offering a unique Christmas experience that’s perfect for solo travelers eager to dive into the holiday spirit. The country’s love for outdoor winter sports ensures that there are plenty of activities where solo adventurers can meet other like-minded travelers.
The sense of tranquility found in Finland’s wilderness also appeals to solo travelers looking for a peaceful retreat. Glass igloo hotels offer a unique way to enjoy the aurora borealis and reflect on the beauty of nature in solitude. Finland’s friendly locals and well-organized tours make it easy to navigate even as a first-time solo visitor. I once spoke with a tour guide for the tour company FTLO Travel and they said their Laplap trip is always the most popular and sells out quickly.
Budget Tip: Opt for off-peak times to save on tours, and consider camping or staying in public cabins to avoid high accommodation costs.
Must Have: Backpack Rain Cover
Top Experiences: Visiting Santa Claus Village, Northern Lights tours, staying in a glass igloo, and enjoying a husky safari.
8. New Zealand
In December, it’s summer in New Zealand, which means ideal weather for hiking, road trips, and exploring the country’s national parks. Whether you’re hiking the Tongariro Alpine Crossing or kayaking through Milford Sound (filled with tons of water falls), New Zealand’s diverse landscapes provide endless opportunities for solo adventurers. The backpacker community here is strong, with plenty of opportunities to meet fellow travelers in hostels, on buses, or during group activities like wine tours or glacier hikes.
New Zealand’s extensive network of hostels and well-marked trails make it easy for solo travelers to explore without feeling isolated. The South Island is famous for its dramatic fjords and mountain ranges, while the North Island offers geothermal wonders and stunning coastlines. Whether you’re road-tripping, hiking, or cycling, you’ll find plenty of solo-friendly experiences.
Budget Tip: Travel by campervan to save on accommodation and transport, and use Department of Conservation (DOC) campsites for free or low-cost camping. Also, Airbnbs are quite expensive in New Zealand. Opt for a hostel or hotel instead.
Must Have: Portable WiFi Hotspot
Top Experiences: Hiking in Fiordland National Park, exploring glowworm caves, and road-tripping through New Zealand’s wine regions.
9. Austria
The festive season brings iconic Christmas markets to life in December, especially in Vienna and Salzburg. Solo travelers can join free walking tours, attend holiday concerts, or explore the cultural richness of cities like Vienna. For outdoor folks, the Austrian Alps provide excellent skiing, snowboarding, and hiking opportunities, perfect for solo adventurers looking to immerse themselves in the country’s natural beauty.
Austria’s history and music traditions also make it a must-visit destination for solo travelers. Whether you’re attending a concert in Vienna or exploring Mozart’s birthplace in Salzburg, you’ll find a welcoming atmosphere and plenty of cultural highlights to enjoy alone or with newfound friends.
Budget Tip: Use night trains to travel between cities and save on accommodation.
Must Have: Crossbody Bag
Top Experiences: Attending a concert in Vienna, exploring Christmas markets, skiing in the Austrian Alps, and visiting Salzburg’s historic center.
10. Australia
Australia is a top December destination for solo backpackers looking to chase the sun. Sydney is the hub for travelers during the holiday season, with its world-famous New Year’s Eve fireworks over the harbor drawing visitors from all over the globe. Australia’s vibrant backpacker culture means it’s easy to meet fellow solo travelers, especially in hostels along Bondi Beach or during beachside barbecues.
The one thing that could be weird about travel backpacking in December is seeing Santa Claus in a bathing suit. You're definitely not going to get the typical "Christmas vibes" but it was definitely be an unforgettable experience.
Budget Tip: When I think travel backpacking, I think of Australia's backpacking culture. Definitely try staying in one of Australia's backpacker hostels.
Must Have: Backpacker Toiletry Bag
Top Experiences: Snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef, road-tripping along the Great Ocean Road, and celebrating New Year’s Eve at Sydney Harbour.
