How To Solo Travel As A Woman

So, you’re thinking about seeing the world alone? Great! Solo travel as a woman is equal parts empowering and intimidating. But let’s be real... there’s no shortage of opinions about whether it’s a smart choice or not. Spoiler: It totally is! But as with anything in life, preparation and mindset are key. So, let’s dive into how I stay safe, have fun, and own the solo travel experience as a woman.

Is Solo Travel Safe for Women? The Big Question

Yes, it is! But like life itself, it comes with some risks. Whether you’re at home or on the road, the reality is that being a woman means you have to think about safety. I guess just like how there is "female privilege" for not having to buy drinks at bars or dinner, there is also "male privilege" for not having to think about safety all the time. But don’t let this scare you... let it empower you to make smart choices on your travels.

Travel is often no more dangerous than daily life. Some countries even rank higher on global safety indices than places like the US or the UK. (Hello, Iceland and New Zealand!) What’s important is knowing how to minimize risks and maximize fun.

Plan Your Trip to Solo Travel as a Woman

Pick the Right Destination:

If you’re new to solo travel, start with places known for being friendly, safe, and easy to navigate. Destinations like Japan, Portugal, Norway, Finland, Iceland, New Zealand, and Switzerland are great for beginners. I found this amazing Solo Female Travel Safety Index that I love to reference. It takes into account safety data coming from the US Travel Advisory, the UK Travel Advisory, the Global Peace Index as well as Risk of Theft, Risk of Scam, Risk of Harassment, and Attitudes Towards Women. Reference it and stick to the countries that rank well.

Research Like a Boss:

Before you go, learn about local customs, laws, and norms. What’s considered polite in one culture might be offensive in another. For example, did you know pointing with your index finger in Malaysia is an absolute no.

Accommodation Matters:

Female-only hostels, like the Hostelle chain in Europe, are a godsend. They often feel safer and are full of like-minded women. Bonus: some offer hair dryers and vanity mirrors! If you plan on staying in a hotel, there are also tons of safety tips such as not staying on the ground floor, not saying your name out-loud at check-in in the lobby, and bringing portable door lock with you.

Packing for Safety as a Solo Female Traveller

Backpack Like a Pro:

A secure, zippered backpack is your best friend. Keep it in front of you in crowded places, and never leave it unattended. Always lock up your backpack with a cable combination lock.

Pack Light, Pack Smart:

Stick to versatile, layerable clothing that’s easy to mix and match. And don’t forget a scarf—it’s a multi-purpose lifesaver for covering up, staying warm, or adding flair to your outfit.

Safety Tips for Solo Traveling as a Woman

Trust Your Gut:

That little voice in your head? It’s there for a reason. If something feels off. Whether it’s a person, a situation, or a place. Listen to it and act accordingly.

Stay Connected:

Always have a fully charged phone and a local SIM card or eSIM. Apps like Google Maps, Uber, and even WhatsApp can be lifesavers. Share your live location with a friend or family member, especially at night. If you have an iPhone, just sharing your location constantly via the "Find My" is fantastic!

Blend In:

Avoid looking like a lost tourist. Walk with purpose, even if you have no idea where you’re going. If someone asks, “Are you alone?” say, “No, I’m meeting a friend.”

Carry a Safety Stash:

Use a money belt or hidden pouch to store extra cash, a copy of your passport, and an emergency contact list. Pro tip: stash a backup credit card in a separate travel document pouch in your locked up bag.

Say No to Unwanted Attention:

Learn a few key phrases in the local language to politely (or firmly) shut down unwanted advances. If all else fails, channel your inner drama queen and yell loudly... IT WORKS!

Hostel Life: Your New Comfort Zone

Hostels are the beating heart of the backpacker community. They’re not just affordable—they’re social hubs where you’ll meet other travelers, many of whom are also flying solo.

Female-Only Dorms: Great for peace of mind.

Lock It Up: Always use lockers for your valuables. Bring your own padlock! Locking up your valuables will also help you get a deeper sleep as your brain doesn't have to worry about anything getting stolen (even though the chances of that happening at a hostel are very slim).

Do Your Homework: Check hostel reviews, especially from women. Look for comments about safety, cleanliness, and location. While looking for reviews from other women, often the reviews will state if they were solo traveling and their age. Try to find the reviews from people who sound like you and your demographic.

How to Get Around Safely as a Solo Female Traveller

Public Transport:

Use trains and buses during the day if possible. Sit near other women or families for extra security. On a similar note, arrive at an unfamiliar destination during the daylight.

Rideshares:

Uber and similar apps are generally safer than hailing a random cab. Always check the license plate and driver’s photo before getting in.

Making Friends as a Solo Female Traveller

The Hostel Bond:

Most solo travelers are open to chatting. A simple “Where are you from?” can lead to instant camaraderie. You can always find people similar to you at a hostel.

Dating on the Road:

Keep it casual, but stay cautious. Use protection and know the local laws regarding contraception. It’s better to be informed than caught off guard.

Solo by Choice:

Don’t feel pressured to always be social. Want a quiet night with Netflix and takeout? Do it guilt-free. Traveling can be exhausting and you should take days for yourself.

    You’ve Got This!

Travelling solo as a woman isn’t just about seeing the world—it’s about seeing yourself in a whole new light. You’ll learn to trust your instincts, face challenges head-on, and embrace the freedom that comes with being on your own. So pack your bag, book that ticket, and take the leap. The world is waiting.
